/TL;DR: There are approximately at least 900 000 furries on this planet/

You’re a freaking furry?! There are TONS of furries at this school!

~ someone

Turns out that I’m suck at locating furries. (really!). But before I actually try to ask if people are talking neon wolf-fox hybrid, I would like to know what are the likelihood of the person being furry.

So, How many furries are there in the world?

What is a furry?

If your reading this, then its probably because I pointed you here. I’m gonna assume you know what a “furry” is a person who enjoys anthropomorphic and fictional animals. Right? RIGHT?

For the intention of this article, “furry” is someone who participates in the furry fandom; ‘cause only you know if you enjoyed /Zootpia/ (unless you tell me).

Most furries are young, males, and presumably have Internet access.% By WikiFur article counts, most furs speak English, followed by Russian.%

disclaimer: This is the first time I try to mess with statistics and research. I probably messed up. This article is informative only.

Furrydom!

Furry websites

Of the most popular furry oriented art websites I’m aware of, the MOST popular is, of course, Furaffinity with 478 000 unique daily visitors. %

Website Daily Visits World Rank
Furaffinity 478 000 1 319
e621 254 000 2 599
Sofurry 23 600 36 049
Weasyl 18 900 54 249
yiff.ru 3 910 171 599

About 58.25% of furries visit furry websites daily. Assuming bot activities are neglect-able

478 000 / 58.25 * 100 = 820 600

There are at least 820 600 furries in world-wide (though estimates are pre-dominantly of the western hemisphere).

I seriously don’t know what you guys like to look at. I just assumed that everyfur visits that uses the Internet daily visits Furaffinity which isn’t true (proof: me). I also assumed that aggressive NATing common among some ISP has been considered. This is also exceptionally biased against furs of non-english native tongue.

There is research on the percent of furs that actually use Furaffinity and other websites, but I’ve yet to mail Nuka. %

Conventions

By WikiFur information, where most recent data is available, 144 furry conventions received a total of 95 544 attendances.

[adjective][species] published an excellent article using convention numbers to estimate fandom sizes. % But I was not able to locate their sources.

If anyone can find useful information regarding convention attendance, please message me. Thanks.

Social Media!

Facebook %

Facebook advertising allows for creepily targeted data-driven marketing over its massive userbase.% But I’m just here to see how many furries are there.

More than 3 millions furries use Facebook according to Facebook

3,661,560

3 million

People who have expressed an interest in or like pages related to Furry Fandom

That, is rather broad and ambiguous.

Twitter %

318 thousands Twitter users engaged with the concept of fursuit on Friday 354 thousands Twitter users engaged with the concept of fursuit on Tuesday

On a late Friday evening (March 39), 318 000 Twitter users engaged with the concept of fursuit. Compared to 354 thousand after midnight on Tuesday, March 26.

120 000 users engaged with "fursuitfriday"

22 000 users engaged with "furryfandom"

Disappointingly, only 120 000 for “fursuitfriday” and 22 000 for “furryfandom”

By the 2015 [adjective][species] survey, about 83% of furries are between the ages of 18 and 29. %

40% of Americans in that age range use Twitter. %

By another study puts an number at 58% between 18 and 34. However, the same study suggests only 27% of Americans with Internet access use Twitter at least once every few days. %

( 100 / 40 ) * 350 000 = 875 000
( 100 / 58 ) * 350 000 = 603 000

There are at least 603 000 to 875 000 furry fandom participants world-wide.

I’m assuming that furries anywhere around all ages use Twitter like the average American (even if they’re Russian!); and got far enough from “Welcome to Twitter” to appear on Twitter Advertising statistics. Many furs are “closeted”; whom’s furryness cannot see the light of day will pull my count down. There is also a growing number of under 18 furries too, who’s Twitter feed are more active yet their numbers will never be known due to ethical research limits.

Discord, Reddit, and Amino

Discord, Reddit, and Amino actually have set communities and publish subscription numbers. As of the end of March 2019: % %

Reddit had 78 700 subscribers to r/furry (for furry arts and discussion), 58 300 on r/furry_irl (for memes), and 91 600 on r/yiff.

Amino had 333 000 members on Furry (english), 56 000 on Furry Espanol, 14 000 on Furry Russia, 22 000 on Furry Portuguese.

There are 20 000 active and inactive members of the largest Discord sever I know, FoxDen. %

78 700 Reddit users on r/furry

Limitations

Alias, these estimates are mostly for the western hemisphere; many furs have been left out. I’ve left out dominantly non-english platforms like VKontakte, Sina WeiBo, and QQ. Considering their popularity in their origin countries; and the not-so-good availability of American web services in China; more examinations are needed to draw a more complete picture.

Of course, everything assumes that people who participates in furry activities (or are otherwise neglectable), are furries; and didn’t get pulled into a convention / website because their friend begged them to.

Anime!

A quick visit to our school’s anime club revealed approximately five anime fans (excluding me) and a mention of the /Anime North/ anime convention.

Anime North had a total attendance of 34 590 in 2018 in Toronto.% More than three times the world’s largest furry convention Mid-west FurFest. For comparison, the largest furry convention in Toronto, Furnal Equinox, served 1830 attendees in the same year.%

34590 / 1830 = 18.90

By this logic, the anime fandom in my locality is almost 19 times larger than the furry fandom. Or in other words, I’m could be the only furry at my school.

But by bashing around with bash/wget/grep and Wikipedia, the 30 largest anime / manga / Japanese culture conventions recived 1 800 000 attendances. Or

1 800 000 / 72 000 = 25

The anime / manga fandom could be 25 times the size of furrydom.

More examinations put that number at about 12 times size of furrydom.

Conclusion

I could be the only fur at my school.
